I do not come to this choice lightly, as I have spent almost four years emotionally and financially invested in this project. We hired actors (some even still unannounced), built uniforms, sets, 3d assets, written scripts, music, props etc; and all that being said, we’re still no closer to putting out a solid product to the community. This story is still incredibly important to me though. It's a story about a broken society, a forgotten ship, a family forced into dealing with very real, pure, and true human emotions. I firmly believe that this story should be told; but frankly where I find myself in life, I have come to the conclusion that I am not in the position to do it justice.
Sadly, STF and the greater Star Trek community as whole has become a negative force in my life. It has become harder and harder to ignore the bickering, posturing, and divisiveness that is plaguing ST fandom in general. I feel as though the waters of the community have turned toxic, and that, coupled with my focus on furthering my professional career has brought me to this decision. Close friends of mine will know that I am focused on a career transition into working as a Production Sound Mixer. So as much as I love this project, I can’t afford the time, energy, or the financial burden it takes to make this project come to fruition. So instead of stringing you along, I’ve decided that this is the best course of action. Our social media pages and website will remain active but comments and messages will not be responded to.
I would like to take a moment to thank all the people in my life who have supported, encouraged, contributed their efforts into this project. I would also love to give a huge thank you to all of the fans who have written to me which such enthusiasm about the project, and for their overall support. I sincerely hope that someday I will be able to revisit STF farther down the road when I am in a better position to bring this story to life. If you’ve made it this far, I appreciate you taking the time to read this and hope to be able to share some amazing things with you in the future.

Peace and long life…

Sincerely,
Dan Thale
Executive Producer

PS - Just to thwart ill-informed rumors; we have never been contacted by, in partnership with, or have had any connection whatsoever with CBS/Paramount/Bad Robot etc...

Update?! - Maybe

https://startrekfutures.weebly.com/blog/update-maybe

https://startrekfutures.weebly.com/blog/update-maybe#comments

Uncategorized

Greetings fans! I wanted to write this post to let you know that we haven't abandoned you, but to also denote a small yet impactful (to some) change in our written description.
As some of you may know we set out to produce a short film at the end of 2014 and obviously this has not happened. This was due to many things, but mostly because I felt it was not the appropriate time. After meetings, returned and unreturned inquires, bouncing ideas around, and revising our script more times than I can personally count, it came down to a point of being confident that our short film could be produced to the standards I have set out for the project. Trying to keep the deadline of the end of 2014 inevitably forced the answer of - No. This does not mean that the project is dead by any means. I have always asserted that this project can only exist under the right circumstances and I will not sacrifice quality to meet a deadline or any other artificial barrier. So rest assured, work on Star Trek Futures will continue even at a snails pace if thats what it takes to complete the project.
Secondly, we have made a small change in the description in our "Story" section of our homepage. To those who wrote us to complain about this specific minor detail, it will be a big change. If you don't know what change was made, then absolutely nothing about our story, characters, setting, etc... has changed. This was a personal decision made by me, the executive producer and not, in any way influenced by CBS/Paramount. Basically it comes down to where I choose to spend my energy: Ignoring and/or responding to Trek-Trolls or focusing on creating the best science fiction as we can. While I am reticent to point out this change, I have committed to being 100% honest and transparent with you, the fans, about the process and pitfalls of this epic endeavor. Enough said.

Anyway, lets get back to work shall we!

Take care,
Dan Thale
Exec Producer

Our Enterprise-C Bridge Design

https://startrekfutures.weebly.com/blog/our-enterprise-c-bridge-design

https://startrekfutures.weebly.com/blog/our-enterprise-c-bridge-design#comments

Uncategorized

We would like to happily present our floorpan for our bridge design. The jacket will also feature a removable rank arm band and the details on the cuffs and edging will be reduced. Also, we will not be using the standard pillowed undershirt. To keep costs down, we will be using the collar from the uniforms seen on the TNG Seasons 3-7 on a false shirt, otherwise known as a "dickie." We'll get our hands on the prototype early next month (March) to get an initial fitting and to work out any other design issues we may find. After that uniform is completed we will use that prototype to design a new jacket that looks great on camera but is not as complex. This again will keep costs down and allow us to outfit the extras with the appropriate uniforms. We're really excited to see this familiar, yet different design on camera. We went out searching for starship designs that we're elegant, well crafted, and rooted in Star Trek canon. We had always liked the idea of using the Enterprise-C in our story line, so when doing research on the Ambassador class we came across a very interesting find. We found that the model that we see in the TNG episode "Yesterdays Enterprise" was actually not the original design for the Ambassador class. It turns out that Andrew Probert, who designed the Enterprise-D, amongst many other beautiful starships had also created a concept sketch for an Ambassador class to reside between the Enterprise-B and D. In correspondence with Mr. Probert he gave me some background on this...

"During preproduction, someone (me or a Producer) thought it would be a good idea to have some sort of size comparison between all ships named Enterprise. I thought it should be on one of the walls in Main Engineering so I came up with a vertical arrangement for one of the narrow walls, sketching in a new “C” Enterprise between the “B” (Excelsior Class) and “D”. The Producers liked the idea but thought, instead, that it should be seen in the Conference (changed to ‘observation’) Lounge wall so I took that opportunity to draft up a hard-line elevation of this new ship, to go along with the rest of the already-in-place Designs. A craftsman was brought in to sculpt the ships as half-hull models, arranging them in a broader grouping,… which was more pleasing for the wall on which it was destined."

"Later, at the beginning of episode six, "Where No One Has Gone Before”, the Enterprise has a rendezvous with the ‘USS Fearless’ to pick up an Engineering specialist,… a five second establishing image. Knowing the Producers below Gene would not have an understanding that, being 85 years beyond Kirk’s time (later changed to 71 years), StarFleet would have a totally different look to the ships, similar to our Galaxy-Class Enterprise. I knew that if I didn’t supply that ‘new’ ship cheaply, that they would resort to using one of the older models so I used that Enterprise-C Design in a small painting to be the Fearless. Having seen a lot of the ‘stock footage’ already in the can, I picked a sequence of the Enterprise entering frame from the upper left corner, drifting toward center frame, and painted it already in orbit, waiting for the Enterprise. This is a small portion of the frame which was mostly blank, waiting to be filled by the Enterprise element. For some reason, I thought, at the time, that the space background should be blue screen-blue,… kinda silly now, but that was my attempt at establishing a new Fleet. As you know, they used an Excelsior Class model and, of course, after I left the show, an episode came up actually featuring the Enterprise-C,… but the Design was changed and the sculpture-wall disappeared, pushing that Design into our foggy memories.

Now, at last, through the overwhelmingly complementary desire to feature this ship in: STAR TREK: FUTURES, and the genius talents of Tobias Richter, she will, at last… fly-"

Probert drafting the Enterprise-C between a drawing of the Excelsior, below, and Enterprise-D (temporarily off the board) above.

We hope you enjoyed hearing this story as much as we did!
